News up-date
- Dates/special events:
- Birmingham - Sunday 16th September 2001 "Vocations -
setting the world ablaze!"
Held in the Oratory Cloister Buildings (followed by Mass in the
Oratory, celebrated by Archbishop Vincent Nichols)
After his gripping and unforgettable address at our Martyrs
Conference two years ago, Archbishop Jozef Zycinski of Lublin,
Poland, was back by popular demand and gave a fascinating and
optimistic talk about the growth of vocations after the fall of the
Iron Curtain. Sister Gianfranca Silvestri, Provincial of the Comboni
Sisters in southern Sudan, then gave a memorable personal witness
about her own vocation to work in this war-torn country, and spoke
of the increasing number of African women now feeling called to the
religious life. In his talk, Neville Kyrke-Smith - the U. K.
Director of Aid to the Church in Need - illustrated the hope now
arising in Ukraine, after years of suffering, because of the witness
and prayers of Ukraine's countless and courageous martyrs. The
conference ended with a beautiful Mass in the Oratory, where
Archbishop Nichols preached a very moving homily.
Thank you to all who joined us for this wonderful day.
- Westminster - 11.30 - 4.30 pm, Saturday 3rd November 2001 "Surviving
Persecution"
Held in Westminster Cathedral Hall (following the usual
Cathedral Mass
at 10.30 am).
Few have experienced religious persecution as the Russians did
for seven terrible decades, and we were honoured to welcome Catholic
Bishop Jerzy Mazur of Irkutsk, Siberia, to speak to us movingly on
this shocking but finally optimistic subject: 'Frozen Faith:
Belarus, Russia and Siberia'. Cecilia Bromley-Martin, the U.K. Press
Officer for Aid to the Church in Need, was in war-torn southern
Sudan during Lent this year and related what she witnessed of the
powerful faith of these people tormented by violence, hunger and
disease in: 'Sudan - faith and hope in the midst of war'. José
Correa, ACN's International Head of Information, drew upon his years
as a journalist and Catholic researcher to provide the numerous warm
and encouraging stories which kept the 300-strong audience gripped
during his fascinating talk: 'The Secret of Christ - underground
evangelisation'.
